Car Timing Belt Purpose:
A timing belt, or cam belt, is the part of your vehicle’s engine that controls the timing of the engines valves. It connects the crackshaft to the camshaft, which, in turn, controls the opening and closing of the engines valves. In some cases, the timing belt will be connected to other parts of the engine as well, like the water pump and oil pump, and is responsible to drive those components. Timing belts are made of a durable rubber and they do have a life span. Your owners manual will tell you when you need to replace it, usually between 60,000 to 100,000 miles.
Car Timing Belt Common Problems:
Depending on the different types of engines, a failed or broken timing belt has varied and numerous effects. No matter what engine your vehicle has, if a timing belt breaks, you will be stranded because the timing belt runs many components of the engine.
A worn timing belt can result in trouble codes from the camshaft or crankshaft sensors, causing a dashboard warning light to be lit.
The engine can make slapping or scraping noises if the timing belt is loose or worn. Adjustment may take care of the noise, but replacement may also be necessary. Follow the suggestions to get your timing belt replaced when consulting a mechanic or your owners manual.
