Car Suspension Purpose:
The job of a car suspension is to maximize the friction between the tires and the road surface, to provide steering stability with good handling and to ensure the comfort of the passengers. All roads, even freshly paved ones, are not flat and have bumps, cracks, dips and folds that would make it very uncomfortable for anyone driving without suspension.
Car Suspension Common Problems:
There are many symptoms of common suspension problems. The best way to know that your vehicle’s suspension is not in danger of failing, take your car to a mechanic who will know what to look for.
Here are some common symptoms of bad suspension:
- Your car rides poorly on rough roads, more than normal. This usually means your shock absorbers are worn and depleting.
- Your vehicle’s height looks lower than it has been in the past, and looks to be settling towards the axles. The suspension springs are most commonly the cause of that problem, and can be replaced.
- Your car makes a popping or clunking noise when turning or going over a bump. This usually means that the vehicle’s ball joints are worn and will need to be replaced.
- Your car vibrates at higher speeds. A vehicle’s suspension system uses bushings at the inner ends of the control arms which will wear out over time, thus allowing more vibration to pass.
